Message sticks are carried in a pouch or basket, and are handed to the recipient upon production of the appropriate password or gesture. Training to both encode and interpret messages starts at a very young age. Message bearers are selected by a committee, who look for such attributes as speed, intelligence, health, endurance etc. It is a vital position within the community, and is highly respected, because good communication can make all the difference between life and death in the mountain forests of Irusaq.
