Augurer
Iboriis, 9th Century Post Imperium: Next to the Shaman to the Bird God, the Augurer is the most feared official on Iboriis. His function is to predict the future of the crops at the seasonal Bird God sacrifice, by analysing the position and condition of the bones of the sacrificial victim, after the birds have had their fill. His magic is complicated, and takes many hours to complete on the actual day of the sacrifice, not counting the days of preparation before the event. Because his job is so terrifying, and his magic is so potent, the Augurer lives alone, and is shunned by all except the Shamans and their helpers. The Sacrificial victim must not see him till the actual moment of sacrifice, because the Gods demand it; if he or she does, the prediction will be invalid, the crops will certainly fail. The Augurer's Robe features a heavy cloak-like collar of beast hair and horns. The body of the Robe is hung with the tools of his trade - blooded bones. The central fetish is very important in the ceremony, but anthropologists have not been able to study this more closely because of the secrecy surrounding the whole event.
